Denver Firefighters Museum makes history at the Mile High Hook & Ladder Fire Muster

DENVER, CO – On June 15th, 2019, at the Mile High Hook & Ladder Fire Muster, the Denver Firefighters Museum made history and showed hundreds of women and girls that they can do the same.

Fire Chief and Museum Board Member Brita Horn and Executive Director of the Museum Jamie Melissa Wilms became the first all female team to drive the museum’s classic 1953 Seagrave Engine. Together, they drove the mile loop of the parade to the awe and excitement of many of the guests along the route. “It was great to see older retired firefighters come up to these two professional women”, said Museum Board President Grant Van der Jagt “and to see them congratulate them on their success and praise them for their leadership”.

Throughout the day, the ladies gave rides to many of the guests at the muster and celebrated this accomplishment. “There were so many young girls telling us they wanted to be us when they grew up”, said Executive Director Jamie Melissa Wilms, “we broke the glass ceiling that day and it was one of the highlights of my career”.

The Muster gathers fire enthusiasts and departments together to showcase fire and rescue services along with some beautiful antique rigs. The museum has participated for many years by providing hands on children’s activities, rides on the classic Seagrave, and sharing the history of the Denver Fire Department.
