ECE-2nd Grade, 1 hour Teacher Led Program
Prior to arriving at the Museum, please have your students divided into three groups if less than 40 will be attending and four groups if more than 40 are expected.
Activity 1 - Dress Like a Firefighter/Firefighters Are Our Friends is a role playing exercises that teaches children about the gear and equipment used by a firefighter and includes a timed module that reinforces the emergency aspects of a fire and demonstrates the physical fitness and agility of a firefighter. Children become familiar with the appearance of firefighters and their role as valuable community helpers.
Activity 2 - Red, The Fire Dog Video (ECE-1st Grade) OR Get Low and Go! Video (2nd grade and up) provides fire safety and prevention information and reinforces information learned in the other activities using an informative video.
Activity 3 – Plan for a Safe Escape House: This activity uses a practice house to teach participants the sound of a smoke detector and the correct response to the alarm, how to determine the fastest and safest route out of the house, how to crawl low under smoke and the importance of having a safe meeting place. The second part of the activity focuses on items in the home that can get hot and burn you or start a fire, and how to stay safe from these hazards.
Activity 4 – Tools of the Trade: This activity is a collections based hands-on station. It allows the students to handle tools used by firefighters to fight fires and review material that talks about their uses.
